Case of Scarlet Fever In Moncton School

A Moncton school has reported a case of Scarlet Fever.

Parents received an email home notifying them of the confirmed case, but also noted that the child was excluded from the school immediately and say the risk is low to others.

Regional Medical Officer of Health Dr. Yves Leger says a child with Scarlet Fever will usually have a sore throat, fever, fatigue, chills and a sunburn like rash that feels like sandpaper.

He says it is a Group A Streptococcal illness, “Most people tend to resolve the infection on their own. However, it can be treated as strep throat is treated with antibiotics and most people make a full recovery.”

Leger says it is not a disease that schools have to report to Public Health, and they haven’t been made aware of any other cases in the region.

He notes, ‘We provide guidelines to schools and daycares about how they should manage with all types of Streptococcal infection.”

It’s suggested students stay home for 24 hours after starting medication.
