The Child Death Review Committee is making several recommendations after examining the deaths of three children under the age of 19.
The first is creating an educational program for children in middle and high schools about the risks of playing the ‘choking game’ in the wake of the asphyxiation death of a 13-year old boy.
The provincial government is also recommended to reinforce education information about the dangers of tobacco smoke, including second hand smoke.
This is after the sudden death of an eight month old boy where a contributing factor was shown to be exposure to tobacco smoke.
Finally, the Department of Environment and Local Government was recommended to develop legislation requiring four sided fencing, at least four feet high with self closing and self latching gates around backyard pools.
This recommendation stems from the drowning death of a two year old boy.
