Common Council Approves Phase Two Of MoveSJ

Common Council voted in favour of moving ahead with the second phase of MoveSJ at a cost of $200,000.

In 2014, the city awarded a contract to IBI to develop a three phase strategic plan for transportation in the city.

Each phase comes at a cost of $200,000 with the overall cost being $600,000.

Councillor Donna Reardon calls it necessary.

Reardon says the plan can align with the asset management plan and PlanSJ.

The first phase focused on research and the second phase will include the development of the plan.

Finance Committee Chair David Merrithew says the city already has recommendations it has not moved forward with including PlaySJ and doing something about the rinks in the city.

Councillor Merrithew and Councillor Gary Sullivan both voted against the second phase.

Councillor Blake Armstrong says the city has been operating blind for 100 years.

Armstrong says the city will spend over $500 million over the next twenty years for transportation without any plan.

He compares it to building a house with no plans.

The hope is for the plan to help develop a strategy for transit and parking in terms of frequency for transit routes, rates and on and off-street parking.
