The Commission on Electoral Reform is proposing the voting age in provincial elections be lowered to 16. That’s one of 24 recommendations in the final report.
Other recommendations include voters being able to rank the candidates in terms of preference, holding off on proportional representation for the time being and not allow electronic voting because of security concerns. The candidate, under the system of preferential balloting, who gets 50 per cent plus of the first rankings would win.
The Commission is also calling for the election date to be changed from the fourth Monday of September to the third Monday of October while maintaining fixed election dates every 4 years.
Another recommendation calls for political financial contributions be lowered from the current limit of $6 thousand.
