February 20, 1932 – March 21, 2026
It is with broken hearts that the family announces the passing of Celine Marie (Riley) Calhoun, which occurred on Saturday, March 21st, 2026, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on February 20, 1932, in Johnville, NB, she was the ninth and youngest child of the late Charles and Hannorah (Pickard) Riley. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mum was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed the history of her great grandparents immigrating from Macroom, Ireland to be one of the founding families of Johnville. She came to Saint John to attend high school at Mount Carmel Academy where she finished first in her class. After graduation she returned to Carleton County where she taught school for a time before returning to Saint John to attend Modern Business College. Upon completion she worked for several local businesses, leaving Irving Pulp and Paper after her marriage and arrival of her first child. She was a stay-at-home mother throughout our younger years and in 1979 started A-One Driver Education that she owned and operated until the sale in 2009.From 1987-1997 Celine also worked as a medical secretary with her son-in-law, Dr Jim Stephenson where she made lasting friendships.
She was a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption parish.
Celine is survived by her children Jane (Jim) Stephenson, Tanya (Walt) McKinney and Shane Calhoun all of Saint John; grandchildren Ben, Maggie, and Lex Stephenson, Jessica (Adam) Doran, Shane (Cobie) McKinney, Hannah DeGrace, Colby (Emily Bonnar) Thompson and Ashley Calhoun: great-grandchildren Gus Calhoun, Riley McKinney and Aries Thompson: daughter in law Shaney Thompson and many special nieces and nephews
Along with her parents, Celine was predeceased by her daughter Jennifer, her siblings Dorothy Crain, Clarence (Bus) Riley, Sr. Patricia Riley SCIC, Tom Riley, Regina (Dean) Haggerty (Clark), Don Riley, Monica Brennan, and Carney Riley.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff in 3DS at the Saint John Regional Hospital. A special thank you to Tammy and Samantha from Kindred Home Care services. Your kindness, care and compassion will not be forgotten.
Arrangements are under the care of Castle Fallsview Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, NB, E2M 2L3, 506-634-1701. Visitation will be held on, Wednesday March 25th from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, March 26th at 12:00 Noon at Our Lady of the Assumption Church 360 Dufferin Row, Saint John. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery to follow funeral mass. In lieu of flowers donations in Celine’s memory can be made to Romero House, Bobbys Hospice, the Westside Food Bank, The Kidney Foundation, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
