David Edward O’Blenis

May 7, 1954 ~ April 24, 2026 (age 71)

With broken hearts, the family of David Edward O’Blenis announce his passing on April 24, 2026, at home with his wife Helen by his side. Born in Saint John, NB, he was the son of Clarence and Mary (Campbell) O’Blenis.

David spent most of his working life in the shipyard, starting in 1971 with Saint John Shipbuilding Ltd., where he eventually became a steel foreman from 1986 to 1996. Over the years, he also worked with Production Equipment Ltd. as a sheet metal worker and welder, and with Bourque’s Industrial as a welder/fitter. He took pride in his work and the jobs he was part of, including supervising the steel crew during the first Canadian shaft bracket installation at the module stage, and later overseeing the unloading of the Hibernia modules. After a serious workplace accident in May of 1981, David dealt with ongoing health challenges, but he kept going and continued working hard.

He also earned his plumbing certificate and took an electronics course at NBCC.

Outside of work, David enjoyed the simple things. He loved fishing, especially at Hunter Lake campsite, and was always quick to mention the 9 ¾ pound brown trout he caught there—still the one to beat. He liked a good game of horseshoes and rarely missed a chance to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs.

David is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen; his daughter Katherine Mary O’Blenis-Adams; and his grandchildren Olivia and Myles. He is also survived by his siblings Helen Nelson, Harry O’Blenis, Barbara Long, John O’Blenis (Lori), Patty O’Blenis (Jim), Donna LaRocque (Lenny), Rick O’Blenis, and Valerie O’Blenis, as well as sisters-in-law Dawn O’Blenis and Chris McGrath (Wayne).

He was predeceased by his son John Edward O’Blenis, his brother William O’Blenis, and brothers-in-law Murray Long and Roger Nelson.

Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home. In keeping with David’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
