Stuart Gregory McIllwraith

February 1, 1965  –  March 15, 2026

With heavy hearts, the family of Stuart McIllwraith of Quispamsis, husband of the late Sandra (Barnes) McIllwraith, announce his unexpected passing, which occurred on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born February 1, 1965, in Saint John, he was a son of the late Robert J. and Ruth E. (Kyle) McIllwraith.

Stuart was a devoted family man whose greatest joy came from time spent with his children and grandchildren. He gave endlessly of himself to those he loved and was always happiest when his family was together. Summer days were often spent hosting backyard BBQs, sharing laughs, a few beers, and creating memories that will be cherished forever.

His love for carpentry began early in life, working various jobs at local construction retailers. He spent 17 years at Ritchie’s Carpet Warehouse, where he honed his skills, built lasting relationships, and developed the strong work ethic he carried throughout his career. Through dedication and natural talent, Stuart went on to build a successful career in construction, eventually working his way up to Site Superintendent while working in British Columbia. His work allowed him to see many beautiful places across the province, experiences he truly appreciated. In his downtime, he embraced the West Coast lifestyle, enjoying fishing adventures and time spent outdoors.

Stuart had a deep love for his dogs, Lucy and Millie, who were constant companions and brought him so much comfort and happiness. He enjoyed long drives with them, the windows down, the wind blowing through his full head of hair, simple moments that brought him peace.

A loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Stuart followed his team with passion. He also loved country music and country music festivals and had been looking forward to attending several this summer, plans that reflected his excitement for life and the things he enjoyed most.

Above all else, Stuart will be remembered for his big heart, his strong work ethic, and his unwavering dedication to his family.

Stuart will be lovingly remembered by his children: Meaghan McIllwraith (Cory Goobie), Sean McIllwraith, Jessica Garfield (Nigel Martin), Gregory McIllwraith, and Marlene Reid (Jonathan); grandchildren: Kathryn McIllwraith, Olivia McIllwraith, Garrett Dempsey, Avelyn Dempsey, Jace Goobie, and Dayton Goobie; brother and sisters: Keith McIllwraith (Brenda), Wanda McIllwraith and Christa

McIllwraith; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Besides his parents, Robert and Ruth, he was predeceased by his wife, Sandra; grandson, Jaxon Dempsey, and brothers, Robbie McIllwraith and Joseph McIllwraith.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Sussex RCMP, the EMTs, and the doctors and nurses who responded and did everything possible. Your compassion and efforts during such a difficult moment will never be forgotten. We would also like to extend a very special thank you to the New Brunswick SPCA and Port City Emergency Veterinary Hospital for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Lucy and Millie, who were also in the car. Knowing they were treated with such love and compassion brought our family great comfort during an incredibly painful time.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). In keeping with Stuart’s wishes, there will not be a visitation or a funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

For those who wish, remembrances to New Brunswick SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
