There are seven cases of Listeria in five eastern provinces, including one in northern New Brunswick.
The source has not been confirmed but prepackaged leafy greens and salad blend kits are of interest in the ongoing investigation.
Acting Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Russell says leafy greens should be washed under cool, running water and not soaked in the sink. There’s the risk they can get contaminated by bacteria in the sink. She also says you should refigerate or freeze perishable food, prepared food and leftovers within two hours and keep those leftovers for a maximum of four days but preferably for only two to three days.
Pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborns, seniors and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of a more severe illness, Dr. Russell warns. They should avoid high-risk foods like uncooked meat and veggies including pre-packaged leafy greens, raw milk and cheese and other foods made from unpasteurized milk, ready-to-eat meats like hot dogs, pate, deli meats and refrigerated smoked seafood and fish.
