August 17, 1931 – October 30, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Leonard Kinsella, 95, of Rothesay, New Brunswick. Len passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2026, just as he wished, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on August 17, 1931, Len lived a full and rich life deeply rooted in the Saint John area. He grew up on Paradise Row (a proud “Valley” boy), the third of seven children born to John A. and Anna (Monohan) Kinsella.
Lenny’s greatest passion in life was sport, particularly hockey. He earned his “V” at St. Vincent’s High School for his contributions to both rugby and hockey, with hockey always holding a special place in his heart. After playing for St. Vincent’s High School, he went on to play Junior Hockey with the Sussex Rangers, and then Senior Hockey with the Corner Brook Royals in Newfoundland, and finally, back at home with the Saint John Oilers. Known for his speed and active stick, he earned the nickname “The Woodchopper” and was no stranger to the penalty box.
His love of hockey continued long after his playing days ended, spending many happy hours in various rinks watching his grandsons continue to play the game he so loved. Later in life, Len discovered another great sporting passion: golf. A member of Riverside Country Club, he enjoyed countless hours on the course with his regular Saturday morning foursome; and, in later years, with his grandsons. Nothing brought Dad greater joy than hearing how the boys had played their rounds.
Len began working at an early age, travelling to the Arctic building the DEW lines. While there he learned to play his favourite card game, crib. A game that brought him hours of enjoyment throughout his entire life, even playing his last game just days before he died. After deciding he had experienced enough of Arctic life, he returned to Saint John and began his long career with Ocean Steel & Construction. He devoted 35 years to the company before retiring. Dad took great pride in his work and truly loved his job. His strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment were an important part of who he was.
Len raised his daughters in Kennebecasis Park, as one of the original residents. He happily involved himself in all aspects of Park life and took great pride in developing the community he loved so much.
Dad had an extraordinary love for life. He never viewed the glass as half empty or half full – his glass was always filled to the brim. He greeted each day with a beautiful smile, a warm heart, and a positive attitude that lifted everyone around him. Dad was a great kidder, who loved to laugh and bring joy to others, he truly had a zest for life!
A deeply faithful man, Dad instilled in his children a strong sense of morals, family, and faith. Always the gentleman, he was quick to teach his grandsons and great-grandsons the importance of a good, strong, hand-shake!
Dad was blessed with many dear friends: Fred Shillington, Peter Daniels, Mack Pike, Gregor Hope, and Denis Anglin who regularly dropped in for coffee, keeping Len in the loop, solving all the world’s problems, and sharing a few good laughs. These visits filled with friendship, humor, and lively conversation meant so much to him. We are deeply grateful to each of you for the time, kindness, and companionship you showed Dad throughout the years.
Len was predeceased by his daughter, Karen Anne Carrier, and her husband, Michael; his wife, Janet L. Kinsella; his parents, John A. and Anna (Monohan) Kinsella; his sister, Joan (Harry) Flood; and his brothers, Arthur (Cathy) Kinsella and Senator Noel (Ann) Kinsella.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Beth (Kirk) Beckingham and Colleen (Bob) Morgan; their mother, Margaret Kern; and his cherished grandchildren, Heather (PJ Shea), Andrew (Devan), Jeffrey (Dani), and David (Maria) Beckingham; Hilary (Tyler) Cole; Sarah (Ryan) MacLaughlin; Matthew (Ainsley) Morgan; Elizabeth (Riley) Morgan; Andrea (Sarah) Carrier; and Steven (Brittany) Carrier. His legacy will continue through his fifteen great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy.
He is also survived by his brother, Donald (Lee) Kinsella of Kingston, Ontario; his sisters, Theresa Rose (the late Gabe) Barban of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Doris (the late Carey) Milan of Saint John; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Words cannot adequately express our gratitude for the patient, gentle, and loving care provided by his special “girls,” Annie, Angie, Carolyn, and Manpreet. Their dedication and compassion made it possible for Dad to fulfill his dearest wish: to remain in the comfort of his own home. For that, we are eternally grateful. We also wish to express gratitude to Home Care By Design, Dr. Patrick Maloney, KV Extramural, and Kennebecasis Drugs for their many, many years of support and guidance.
Len’s life was a testament to the importance of family, friendship, faith, and finding joy each and every day. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and an unwavering love of life.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
